The term “Big Data” was first coined in 2008 by Doug Laney, vice president and research director at Gartner. He defined it as “high volume, high velocity and/or high variety information assets that demand cost-effective, innovative forms of information processing that enable enhanced insight and decision making”.

The three V’s (Volume, Velocity and Variety) are what make Big Data so challenging to work with. The sheer volume of data makes it difficult to use traditional methods for analysis; there is too much data for a human to manually process or for an organisation to create an automated system for processing them all. This is why we need new technologies like big data analytics software in order to analyse these huge datasets in a timely manner without human intervention.
